LORRAINE CANDY
EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, ELLE
I’m very proud to have made this shortlist for the first time (please excuse my showing off with the following thoughts).
I think determination, lateral thinking and a refusal to accept no as an answer have helped me harness the creativity of the fashion world to put out a magazine unlike any other commercial monthly. The 2009-2010 highlights? Working with London Underground to create 25 posters by designers and commissioning Pete Doherty to illustrate our fashion well in an issue (October 2009) that won a coveted Yellow Pencil design award; putting Boris Johnson on a cover and taking him to the front row; sponsoring the ELLE Commission photography prize at the National Portrait Gallery; setting up the design Talent Launch Pad with the BFC; commissioning a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer; working with Sarah Brown to promote The White Ribbon Alliance; conducting a survey on happiness that made national news; and finally, presenting the ELLE Style Awards.
This is the year we embraced new media, commissioning fashion bloggers like Garance Doré and Tommy Ton to shoot for us (we were the first glossy to do this). I also introduced ELLE Opinion, tackling topics from feminism to abortion and politics, proving that ELLE is a fashion magazine with a voice. I oversaw five editorial supplements – these gave a significant boost in circulation, proving that what our readers want is, well, more ELLE – and edited two issues of ELLE Collections, our biannual catwalk bible, which I revamped after persuading the management team to invest in a more expensive product (not easy): I introduced new sections on matte paper and commissioned unique artwork.
The result is a 15% increase in subscriptions YOY (and 80% retention levels) and an improved share of luxury fashion advertising.
Editors are only as good as their team, and mine is the best, but I hope the brave choices I’ve made, such as consistently refusing copy and picture approval on covers (Lindsay Lohan’s agent still hasn’t forgiven me) and the ideas I’ve contributed have inspired the team to create a magazine of unparalleled editorial excellence.

GILLIAN CARTER
EDITORIAL DIRECTOR, GOOD FOOD MAGAZINE
This has been an outstanding year for Good Food. The magazine celebrated its 20th birthday and the reach of the brand (magazine, website, books and Good Food shows) is greater than ever. Subscriptions reached a record-high of over 165,000 (up 8% year on year) and Good Food won the PPA Consumer Media Brand of the Year.
My role is to direct the core editorial content, and to keep true to our brand DNA – recipes to cook at home. The new, exclusive recipes that my team create in the test kitchen for the magazine also populate the website, BBC cookbooks, our licensed editions, one-shot titles, i-Phone and i-Pad apps. It's crucial to get this content consistently right, and this year has been particularly challenging.
The recession hit, so I wanted more ‘moneywise’ recipes; healthy eating is high on the agenda, so I pushed the cookery team to consider this every month; ethical eating, sustainable food – we need to cover ‘issues’ through practical recipe content that appeals to a food-savvy readership of 1.2 million.
Good Food has been the market leader for 20 years, and readers look to us for expert advice as well as cooking inspiration. It’s a lot to live up to, and readers have high expectations of a BBC brand.
So I’m the one making sure that my food team don’t get too ‘cheffy’, when they could be succinct, and reminding them that not everyone has a Waitrose on the doorstep.
To be honest, getting anyone to spend £3.40 on a recipe magazine is a big ask, as millions of people now Google recipes for free instead. Which leads me to bbcgoodfood.com. Our profitable site attracts over 2 million unique users a month (up 70% year on year). What I love most, though, are users’ comments on our recipes. I use these as a daily reminder of what people most want from Good Food, and how we can continue to give this to them.
I’m thrilled to be nominated for this award, and would be delighted to accept it on behalf of my wonderful team and a great magazine.

SUE JAMES
EDITORIAL DIRECTOR, WOMAN&HOME
Working as an editor has never been a job for me. It’s a heartfelt passion – something I wanted to do from the moment I graduated from the London School of Fashion and went to work in magazines, and something I’ve absolutely loved since my first editorship on Prima more than 20 years ago.
In my role at woman&home I’m more passionate about what I do than I’ve ever been. I think that’s because our readership is one I so strongly believe deserve a great magazine to inspire them and reflect their lifestyles and interests. Hey, I’m one of them and I know that’s what I’m looking for!
When I first came to w&h, I felt that today’s modern 40+ women weren’t effectively recognised by the magazine market. These are women who no longer fit the old stereotypes and who can’t be pigeonholed. Today’s 40+ women are positive, forward-thinking, not afraid of breaking a few rules and living a different life to that of previous generations of women.
So creating a magazine for this audience has been – and continues to be – my goal. I want to offer them the best fashion and beauty advice, features that reflect and stimulate their interests, food they want to cook and eat, and the latest interiors trends chosen to inspire them.
Readers are always at the heart of the magazine, too, fronting feature, fashion and beauty pages. woman&home is a magazine about them and for them, and I’m passionate about improving what we do with every issue.
Of course, I can only execute my vision with a great team behind me and I firmly believe I have the best in the business. I’m privileged to direct them and work alongside them.
And the results indicate we’re doing something right: we’ve had consecutive ABC rises since I came to w&h and are now at our highest circulation in 14 years. Our ABC was 369,321 for the first half of 2010, a rise of 5.5% year on year, and subscribers are at an all-time high.
It doesn’t stop here. I’m passionate about the future, too.

JOHN MICKLETHWAIT
EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, THE ECONOMIST
I became editor of The Economist in 2006. My first priority was to strengthen our financial coverage, so we brought in talented journalists from the Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal. The world economy blew up a couple of years later. Our journalists have done a brilliant job of covering the crisis—not just in explaining clearly a story of massive complexity, but also in, for instance, predicting the bursting of the asset bubble and pointing out that Greece’s debts were far higher than anybody thought. Other stories I am particularly proud of are one entitled “Gendercide”, showing that 100m women are missing in the world because of infanticide and selective abortion; one criticising the Tories’ “broken Britain” campaign, and demonstrating that on most social indicators the country is getting better; and one showing that the value of sales of Damien Hirst’s paintings dropped by 93% in a year.
Most publications have cut back their investment in foreign coverage in recent years. Because The Economist is a global publication, and we live or die by the quality of our journalism, I have done the opposite. Under my editorship, we have opened several new bureaus.
Since I became editor, our worldwide circulation has risen from 1,138,000 to over 1,440,000. The web, which is killing other publications, has helped us: the more information there is out there, the more people want a trusted voice to tell them what matters.
Most of our growth so far under my editorship has come from outside Britain. Now we are targeting this country. Our new campaign is already working: in the first half of this year, our audited circulation was 4.2% up on the previous year, and it looks as though the rise is accelerating.
So we hope to keep changing and growing. But at its heart The Economist is the same as it ever was: a campaigning liberal newspaper, beholden to no party. We are lucky to have a good commercial model and to live in an ever more global world. In the end, however, it all comes down to good stories and ideas.

MICHELLE PAMMENT
EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, YOUR M&S MAGAZINE
My job – and I love it! – is to produce a bi-monthly glossy lifestyle magazine which reaches 1.9 million ABC1 women every issue¹. It has to be packed with inspirational content to catch and hold readers’ attention as it’s competing for their time and attention against all the other magazines that they love on the newsstand.
Customers regard M&S as a brand to trust; it’s known for quality, range, innovation and value. The brand has an approachable and responsive personality so my aim – working with my talented team - is always to create content that works hard to embody these values.
Our readers demand inspirational creative, so I commission world-famous photographers – such as Joseph Montezinos, Gustavo Papaleo and Troy Word – to create our fashion shoots. The likes of Philip Webb and Alastair Hendy shoot our sumptuous food pages.
At the same time Your M&S has to hit my client’s commercial objectives which means inspiring the reader to think and act. And they do. After reading, 60% of Your M&S readers were inspired to visit a store².
The M&S customer is always at the heart of our content. M&S’s customer base is diverse so the magazine’s readership reflects this (35% of readers are 35-54 and 45% are 55+¹) and a broad appeal is vital for reader relevancy, so I use a friendly, inclusive editorial style. And I know from research that readers want advice and solutions. They want to know what the trends are and how to wear them, which jeans are best for their age and shape, or how to cook delicious seasonal dishes or a budget dinner.
Seventy-five per cent of readers say that the magazine gives them ideas on how to look more stylish, 61% say it inspired them to revamp their wardrobe3. That’s a lot of women taking a lot of heart from the editorial in Your M&S. In my client’s words, ‘As a vital part of our marketing mix, Your M&S magazine needs to revolve and evolve around our customers' needs and our brand. Michelle's strong creative direction, team leadership and commercial awareness has meant that the magazine continues to hit the spot on all levels - customer perception, brand synergy, sales, retention - a direct result of the inspirational, solution-lead lifestyle content Michelle brings to our table.' MORGAN REES
EDITORIAL DIRECTOR, MEN’S HEALTH
“Nobody told me you have to follow up a good idea by having another one.”
Father Dougal McGuire
It’s a footballing truism that a team is at its most vulnerable having just scored. Intoxicated by accomplishment, a mixture of complacency, hubris and inattentiveness can often see fortunes reversed as swiftly as they were won. Fortunately, I watch a lot of football. Having put Men’s Health ahead in 2009 by becoming the UK’s best-selling men’s magazine, throwing away a lead was never an option.
In the past year the magazine has gained a newfound currency within the media at large: Observer Woman profiled the team in an attempt to understand our 'secret'; The Times Magazine consciously pastiched an MH cover; even well-known competitors used the words “men’s health” on the cover. But rather than been distracted by accolades and back-handed compliments, our focus for 2010 has been about consolidating successes, persistently pressing the opposition and continuing to nail the lie that the only way for a magazine to go mass-market was to go down market.
In order to cement the number one position in the market, we’ve invested the capital of the magazine’s success into new platforms for the brand. And it came together beautifully. Two ABC periods saw us put more clear water between ourselves and the chasing pack, while our website underwent a successful redesign, increasing its reach to 897,000 unique users. Men’s Health also began to position itself effectively for the brave new world of the iPad by becoming Natmag’s top-seller on Zinio.
We’ve been tireless in our quest to find new outlets for the magazine. Men’s Health workout mixes have been a huge hit on iTunes with the world’s biggest DJs spinning tunes at scientifically measured bpms to help readers meet their fitness goals – the Erick Morillo mix got to no.3 in the download charts. For more old-fashioned motivation Men’s Health Survival of the Fittest adventure races have now been rolled out over three cities, with the dual purpose of brand-building, contributing massively to the bottom line.
But these additional platforms depend on the magazine maintaining its reputation for excellence and editorial innovation, and Men’s Health has continued to evolve and confound those who would pigeonhole it, attracting contributors like Will Self, Tim Harford and Jay McInerney.
Never complacent, always passionate about our brand and the constituency it serves, and increasingly enthusiastic about the future of publishing, our quiet, methodical approach is Men’s Health’s secret weapon in a fast-evolving marketplace, and a blueprint for managing a brand, not just a magazine.

THE 2010 BRITISH SOCIETY OF MAGAZINE EDITORS AWARDS ARE HERE!
CALL FOR ENTRIES FOR THE 2010 BSME AWARDS www.bsmeawards.com
It’s that time again - time to enter the BSME Awards and book your table for the Dinner. This year we are not producing a printed leaflet. Instead we have created an online leaflet, so to enter or book your places for the Dinner just visit www.bsmeawards.com. The deadline for entering is – Thursday, 29 July – so we’ll need you to complete the form and send in your supporting material before you head off on holiday! Whether you edit a Business, Consumer, Customer, Newspaper or Online Magazine, there are categories for you to enter.
This year we have a new category in the Editors of the Year Section: Sport, Leisure & Health, for titles focusing on sport, gardening, or health and wellbeing; and the hugely popular Art Director of the Year Award has now been split into three categories: Business, Consumer Weekly or Fortnightly, and Consumer Monthly or Less Frequent. Other changes are that Current Affairs magazines will join the Newspaper Category; the Special Interest category now includes Hobbies; and the Lifestyle category will now be for titles focusing on food, homes & interiors and travel.
It is free for BSME members to enter the Awards. There is a single entry fee for non-members of £145 inc VAT, regardless of how many categories are entered. This fee includes membership of the Society until 31 December 2010. Online payment is now accepted. There is no charge to make a nomination for the Editors’ Editor of the Year Award.
The BSME Awards are the only UK awards run by magazine editors for magazine editors. Please ensure that you and your magazine/magazine website are represented - and remember to cast your vote for the Editors’ Editor of the Year.
The winners will be announced and Awards presented at The London Hilton on Tuesday, 9 November. Do book your tickets early as we usually sell out - and remember, it is cheaper if you book and pay before Friday 15 October.
It would help enormously if you returned your entry form as soon as possible. Good luck to everyone who enters! If you have any queries please contact Gill Branston, the BSME Administrator, on 020 8906 4664.
