BSME Does a Magazine Need Paper - Event Logo Twitter .jpg

When is a magazine not a magazine? Does it have to be printed? And if not, then how does the magazine experience work best in the digital world? A bespoke website? A page turner? A one-size-fits-all app? None of the above? Making magazines work in the digital world has been one of the biggest challenges facing editors in the modern era and this event will pose all those questions to see if we can find an answer.

The Panel includes Marcus Fairs of Dezeen, Tshepo Mokoena, Editorial Director of (UK) and Ranj Begley, Managing Director and Chief Content Officer at Readly UK, and will be chaired by Charlotte Moore, Head of Content at BOTTLETOP.

Marcus Fairs was named by the Evening Standard as one of the 1,000 most influential people in London in 2018.  Having launched and edited international architecture and design magazine Icon, in 2006 he co-founded online architecture title Dezeen.  Dezeen now attracts over two million unique visitors every month and is widely regarded as the most influential and popular design website in the world.

Tshepo Mokoena is the Editorial Director of in the UK, where she oversees management of VICE's editorial team as well as content strategy. Prior to this she was the UK Editor of Noisey, VICE’s music website, having first joined the company as VICE's Weekend Editor in January 2016. Tshepo began her career in journalism assistant editing a youth arts and culture online magazine based in Brixton, before working on the Guardian's Music desk where she spent two years as a journalist and video producer. Through her writing and commissions on pop culture, gender, race, mental health and relationships, she seeks out humanising stories that make sense of the world for an under-35 audience.

Ranj Begley is UK MD and Chief Content Officer at Readly UK, the European leader in digital magazine subscriptions and award winning all-you-can-read magazine app.   Its content portfolio now includes over 4,000 titles and a rapidly growing reach globally.  Prior to joining Readly, Ranj had a number of senior management roles at companies including Dovetail, Highbury House, CDS Global and UBM plc.  This year she won PPA Leader of the Year.

Charlotte Moore’s background is in print.  She edited Marie Claire Runway and was editor-in-chief of InStyle UK, before becoming Head of Digital Content for Marie Claire and InStyle, and then moving to her current position as Head of Content at BOTTLETOP.

The event is being hosted by five-star The Trafalgar St. James, where guests will enjoy the Hotel’s signature Cocktail (or Mocktail) in one of London’s best kept secrets: Rockwell, their new ‘tropical themed retreat’, before moving to Biblio, their ‘decadent’ events space for the discussion.
