BSME YOUNG WRITERS’ PRIZE

WITH CAITLIN MORAN

Support the future of journalism

Become a founding sponsor of the BSME and Caitlin Moran Young Writers’ Prize.

The British Society of Magazine Editors has teamed up with award-winning journalist and BSME Columnist of the year, Caitlin Moran, to launch a bold new initiative: an annual prize to discover and support brilliant young writing talent.

Caitlin and the BSME share a mission to open doors for young writers who show exceptional promise but lack the connections or resources to break into journalism. We are looking for the next generation of original voices - writers who show the same spark Caitlin did as a teenager in Wolverhampton.

Why this matters

In a time when journalism urgently needs fresh voices, this prize will

  • Champion emerging talent from all backgrounds

  • Remove financial barriers to entering journalism

  • Showcase the industry’s commitment to inclusion and innovation

HOW IT WORKS

Who can apply?

Young people aged 18-25 from across the UK

How we’ll find them?

Through youth organisations, colleges, universities, teachers, social media and industry networks

What they’ll submit

A short piece of original writing and a personal statement

Who decides?

A judging panel of top editors on the BSME Committee will shortlist the entries; Caitlin Moran will choose the winner

What they’ll win

  • A cash bursary to support their writing

  • One year of personal mentoring from Caitlin

  • An internship with a top UK editor

  • Highly Commended winners will receive a work experience opportunity

Timeline

The Prize will launch at the BSME Awards 2025 (November 27 at Rosewood London). The biggest night in magazine media. The competition will open for entries in the first quarter of 2026 and winners will be announced at our Talent Awards in June 2026.
