The Future of Diversity & Inclusion

BSME AT THE PUBLISHING SHOW

We loved our return of IRL events at The Publishing Show last week, where BSME committee member Andrea Thompson chaired a lively panel on The Future of Diversity & Inclusion in the Media.

There were so many takeaways to share and here are a few, written by Andrea, from the discussion with the brilliant Ateh Jewel, Dr. Joanna Abeyie, Curtis Moldrich and Amit Katwala.

⭐ For lasting change to happen we need genuine salary transparency and adequately paid starter positions so that certain communities are no longer excluded from the outset.

⭐ Want to recruit from outside your usual talent pool? Think about the sorts of places people you're trying to attract hang out. Search Eventbrite for events based around their community and interests.

⭐ Getting through the door is just the first step. If the 'culture' is homogeneous or the senior management team lacks diversity people will leave.

⭐ A genuinely inclusive culture is about making sure everyone feels able to be themselves instead of putting on a mask. It's also about them feeling accepted, supported and safe expressing their views.

⭐ Research shows diverse companies are better for staff morale, increase creativity and productivity. They also increase overall company performance and profitability by widening their customer base. And hold onto talent. In short, it's a no brainer!

A podcast and video of the discussion is coming soon. Thank you to The Publishing Show for having us, and to our panel for an amazing event!
